Flour Tortillas Recipe

I have tried making this and it is not easy at all, definitely something that will take some time to get right, let alone master. This recipe makes around 12-14 tortillas, so keep that in mind later on in the steps.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups of all purpose flour
  • 2 Tbsp baking powder
  • 8 Oz of hot water
  • 1/3 cup of lard or shortening
  • 1 Tsp salt (salt of choice)

Prep

Turn stovetop on ready to cook on medium-high heat. Prepare/get something to hold the finished tortillas, a long sheet of foil paper, enough to cover the tops and bottoms of the tortillas, and a couple sheets of paper towels laying in the foil is enough if nothing is available.

Instructions

Step 1

Mix the flour, baking powder, and salt with a whisk throughly

Step 2

Add the lard/shortening to the mixture, mixing till it gets crumbly like sand

Step 3

Add the hot water (as hot you can physically touch), mix well by hand. If more water is needed (because it is clumpy and not one whole piece), add a small amount of water at a time and kneed till desired consistency.

Step 4

Set aside for 15-30 minutes (the longer the better), in a plastic wrap like saran wrap or a grocery bag

Step 5

Begin to pinch the dough, seperating small dough balls from it, placing them bad inside the plastic wrap from before. Remember this makes 12-14 tortillas so keep that in mind when dividing up the dough.

Step 6

Take one ball at a time out and place on counter-top, make sure to put flour on surface and on dough ball so nothing sticks.

Step 7

Use rolling pin to flatten the ball, rotate clockwise making sure to evenly spread out the dough (Make sure to not make too thin or else they will break like a chip once they're cooked and don't make too thick or else it'll be under cooked inside).

Step 8

Begin to cook on stovetop, multiple air bubbles should begin to form while cooking, this is when you should flip them around.

Step 9

Once more air bubbles form on the second side, it should be done (if still a bit white, flip over again to give it more color, but be careful to not burn it).

Step 10

Place finished tortillas into the holder and repeat steps 8 & 9 till all dough is finished.
