Bunuelos Recipe
As mom says "This is the perfect way to ring in the new year." Though, in my opinion, these are perfect for anytime of the year. She also makes this by hand, not with any mixer or tool.
Ingredients
Dough:
- 1 cup flour
- ½ cup hot water
- 1 Tsp sugar
- 1 Tsp brown cinnamon
- ½ Tsp baking powder
- 1 Tsp Lard
Coating:
- Sugar
- Cinnamon
Prep
Preheat cooking oil in a pan over low heat
Instructions
Step 1
Mix dry ingredients (flour, sugar, cinnamon, baking powder) together until mixed throughly.
Step 2
Add lard to dry mixture and mix throughly
Step 3
Add hot water slowly while mixing, adding a little bit at a time. Kneed the mixture until it's no longer sticky
Step 4
Once mixture is no longer sticky, begin to tear pieces out for the base, no bigger than a half-dollar coin.
Step 5
Let dough pieces rest for about 10-15 minutes.
Step 6
For the coating, mix together sugar and cinnamon, adding just enough cinnamon to give the mixture flavor and color.
Step 7
Taking one piece at a time, begin to flatten paper thin. Not like a tortilla but should be stretched out till it can't anymore.
Step 8
Put base into heated oil and fry until they are golden brown, being careful to now burn them.
Note:
There might be small pockets of grease that pop up on the base while frying, make sure to pop these as they appear so that you don't bite into grease while eating.
Step 9
Once taken out of the hot oil, coat with sugar-cinnamon mixture immdiately. Covering the whole base till desired taste is reached.
